How to Define Curly Wigs (Without Losing Your Mind)
Posted on June 24 2025
If curly wigs have ever felt like the bane of your existence — constant frizz, undefined curls, just… chaos — chances are, no one ever taught you how to take care of them.
From detangling to defining and taming frizz, this is your one-stop blog shop to finally get the curls you thought you were buying.
How to Detangle Curly Wigs
Rule #1: Do not detangle dry hair. Ever. That’s the fastest way to go from luxury to lint ball.
Start by spraying your wig with water & follow up with a leave-in or mousse then gently work through the hair using a wide-tooth comb or a 9-row detangling brush.
Always start from the ends and work your way up.
You’re not ripping through knots. You’re detangling with care.
But detangling isn’t the same as defining.
Let’s talk about that…
How to Define Curly Wigs
Most people stop at detangling and call it a day. It's what everyone is teaching (except me). But if you want juicy, defined, frizz-resistant curls, you need that flicka-da-wrist.
Defining curls means giving curls definition (duh, right?)
Many people will tell you to use 5-6-7-8 different products but my favorite thing to use is simply water and Design Essentials Almond Avacado Curl Defining Mousse. You only need one product. I've tried and tested this on loose and kinky textures. It always works!
Frizz? Controlled. Definition? Cheff Kiss!

How to Reduce Frizz on Curly Wigs
Let’s be real, homegirl, if your wig is frizzing and tangling like it’s fighting for its life, you might not have a frizz problem. You might have a quality problem.
If your wig sheds every five minutes, tangles from a light breeze, and mats up at the nape? That’s not your fault. That’s a company issue.
What you can control is your curl care. When you define quality hair properly, your curls can stay juicy for days — especially if you take your wig off at night like I do.
